Get involved. Learn the game. Earn while you develop.
The MBA Junior Referee Program gives youth the opportunity to get involved in basketball in a new way while developing valuable officiating, communication and leadership skills.
The program is designed to introduce new referees to officiating in a supportive environment and provide them with the training, mentorship and game experience they need to grow and become confident officials.
Our goal is to create a pathway for referees to progress from new Junior Referee ? experienced Junior Referee ? certified/striped official.
Who Can Apply?
The Junior Referee Program is open to youth ages 12-17.
No previous refereeing experience is required. Whether you have played basketball for several years or are simply interested in learning more about officiating, we encourage you to apply.
Training
All Junior Referees will receive training before officiating games.
Training sessions for the 2026-2027 season are planned for September 21-October 2 and will include two separate sessions:
Multiple options will be offered for each clinic. All Junior Referees will be required to attend one rules/officiating clinic and one on-court practical session to be included in the 2025-2027 program.
Specific clinic dates and times will be provided to registered Junior Referees once finalized.
Mentorship & Development
Training doesn't stop after the clinics. Junior Referees will receive ongoing support and mentorship throughout the season. Experienced referees and mentors will help observe games, provide feedback, and support officials as they build their confidence and skills.
As referees gain experience, there will also be opportunities to take on more advanced assignments and work toward progressing into certified officiating.
Game Assignments & Pay
Junior Referees will primarily officiate games within MBA's Recreation League throughout the Fall/Winter season. Assignments will take into consideration the referee's age, experience, availability and level of development.
Junior Referees are paid per game, with rates increasing based on experience. Additional information about game assignments, scheduling and pay rates will be provided to successful applicants before the season begins.
